Conscious parenting or Positive discipline?

Conscious parenting and Positive discipline differ most on structure, consistency that can be held and where guidance comes from. They agree, more than most people expect, on response to distress, doing it themselves and risk. Neither is the correct one. What follows is what each asks of a parent, and where the difference actually shows up on a Tuesday.

The premise is that most of what a parent reacts to is their own history arriving on time, and that the child is not the problem to be solved. Rather than a technique for the child's behaviour it offers a practice for the parent's reaction: notice the trigger, name what it belongs to, and respond to what is actually in front of you. Expectations for who the child should turn out to be are treated as the thing to let go of.

What it asks of you

  • Genuine self-examination, sustained rather than occasional
  • Giving up the ambition to produce a particular kind of adult
  • Tolerating that this offers very little to do when a child is hitting their sibling right now
  • Some support of your own, because the approach asks a great deal of the parent

Adlerian in origin: misbehaviour is read as a mistaken attempt to belong, so the answer is to give the child a real job in the family rather than a punishment. Family meetings are literal. Consequences exist but must be related to what happened, and encouragement replaces praise — you comment on the effort and the contribution rather than on the child.

What it asks of you

  • Running family meetings, in practice and not in theory
  • Finding a related consequence under time pressure, which is much harder than imposing any consequence
  • Holding firm and kind in the same sentence
  • Patience with a method that is slower than counting to three and is supposed to be

Where they differ

Conscious parenting is the filled marker, Positive discipline the hollow one. Widest difference first.

D3Consequences

A3Expectation

Conscious parenting sits firmly toward their own pace, no push; Positive discipline sits a little toward their own pace, no push.

Where they agree

Usually more than the argument between them suggests.

  • Response to distress. Both sit a little toward step in and settle them straight away.
  • Doing it themselves. Both sit toward letting them do it badly, from early.
  • Risk. Both sit between the two.
  • Physical closeness. Both sit between the two.
  • Who decides. Both sit toward we work it out with them.
  • Praise and rewards. Both sit toward describing what is there.
  • Whose needs count. Both sit between the two.

Neither of these is the correct one

Which fits depends on what you value and on what your week actually allows — and the second of those is the half nobody writes about. The questionnaire scores both.
