Free-range or Low-demand, high-warmth?

The difference between Free-range and Low-demand, high-warmth is mostly one axis: response to distress. Free-range sits toward let them work through it; Low-demand, high-warmth sits toward step in and settle them straight away. They agree, more than most people expect, on where guidance comes from and bandwidth. Neither is the correct one. What follows is what each asks of a parent, and where the difference actually shows up on a Tuesday.

Children get the roaming range their grandparents had, on the argument that the world is not measurably more dangerous and that constant supervision has costs of its own. Walking to school alone, using a knife, going to the shop — earlier than is now normal, and openly. The position is as much about adult anxiety as about children.

What it asks of you

  • Tolerating other adults' disapproval, which is the real cost and arrives quickly
  • Genuinely letting go, rather than following at a distance
  • Accepting a higher rate of minor injury as the price of competence
  • A neighbourhood, and sometimes a legal jurisdiction, that permits it

Baumrind called this permissive, which has become a word for a failure rather than a name for a position. As a position it is coherent: high warmth, high availability, and a genuine reluctance to impose. Requests are made rather than demands, and most things are negotiable. It also has the clearest evidence against it of any row here on externalising behaviour, and that is stated rather than buried.

What it asks of you

  • Accepting more day-to-day friction, because little is settled in advance
  • Holding warmth steady when very little is being asked in return
  • An honest look at the evidence, which is less favourable here than elsewhere
  • Distinguishing this from having run out of road, which looks identical from outside

  • Where guidance comes from. Both sit toward instinct and observation.
  • Bandwidth. Both sit a little toward running on empty.

Neither of these is the correct one

Which fits depends on what you value and on what your week actually allows — and the second of those is the half nobody writes about. The questionnaire scores both.
