Behavioural / structured or Unconditional parenting?

The difference between Behavioural / structured and Unconditional parenting is mostly one axis: consequences. Behavioural / structured sits firmly toward the same consequence, every time; Unconditional parenting sits firmly toward no imposed consequences at all. They agree, more than most people expect, on doing it themselves and risk. Neither is the correct one. What follows is what each asks of a parent, and where the difference actually shows up on a Tuesday.

Behaviour is addressed as behaviour. The rule is stated in advance, the consequence follows immediately and identically every time, and the discussion happens later or not at all — because the discussion is what most children are after. Reward systems run the same way in reverse. It is the most reliably effective approach in the short run and makes the fewest claims about anything else.

What it asks of you

  • Near-perfect consistency; the method is the consistency and fails without it
  • Not explaining yourself mid-incident, which feels wrong to most parents who try it
  • Every adult in the house running the same system
  • Accepting that it manages behaviour and does not claim to do more

Kohn's argument is that punishments and rewards are the same tool, and that both teach a child their standing depends on their behaviour. So neither is used: no time-outs, no sticker charts, and no "good job". Problems are solved with the child, out loud, and the test of any parenting move is whether it would still work if the child could see exactly why you were doing it.

What it asks of you

  • Giving up every quick tool at once, with nothing fast to replace them
  • Talking through what a consequence would have settled in ten seconds
  • Standing apart from nursery, school and family, all of whom use both
  • Real bandwidth — this is the most time-expensive row in the instrument

Where they agree

Usually more than the argument between them suggests.

  • Doing it themselves. Both sit between the two.
  • Risk. Both sit between the two.

Neither of these is the correct one

Which fits depends on what you value and on what your week actually allows — and the second of those is the half nobody writes about. The questionnaire scores both.
